What is wrong with this younger generation?

Their work habits are terribly remiss. I have young ones at work acting surly to other co-workers because they don't want to be told what to do. My own offspring quit a job because someone disrespected him. I'm wondering where they learned this behavior from.
Are we remiss in their upbringing or, is it what they learn from their peers?
In my son's case it has to be his peers because I didn't give him everything. In fact I didn't give him much at all. I hoped I would have set a good example by my work habits but maybe he never noticed. I tried to get him set up in a job where he would learn a skill that he could use. He not only threw that away but never even considered that his behavior may effect my employment since I recommended him.
I thought I told him respect has to be earned but I guess it's a lesson he didn't pay any mind to. His behavior certainly didn't earn any respect at all.

Oh how I wish I had an answer for how it is that the work ethic is so different today.

I threatened to whap the girl who came home from college telling me what she'd learned in school was 'it's what can the employer do for ME' that's important.

I re-educated her. LOL
